Dedicated to the memory of mom, Margaret K. Apo, advocate of the public school children of
Hawaii. 18 yrs. a member of the elected State Board of Education whose reply
to the suggestion she  retire at age 80 was,
"And who will take care of the children?"

Throughout her tenure she made herself available to
the serious concerns of parents (AND admin
istrators)
and take immediate action to make right the issues.
As a result the people of Hawaii wanted her on the Board
and kept reelecting to remain. She did not campaign.
She served the interests of parents and children.

As a very young parent with 4 children she discovered
that I was left alone without counseling or instruction.
F's became C's at schools year end justifying my  promotion
to the next grade. After grade 6 she pulled 4 of us out of
public school and into a parochial school where I excelled to the top of the class
in grade 8. I received my first counseling ever on day 2d day in the private school.

Our State-wide public school system was 2-tiered, public, and English Standard, to accommodate
the children of our elite families. When our neighbor told Mom about her weeping niece being
turned away from the public H.S. adjacent to where she lived,
Mom was aghast and ran a Letters to the Editor campaign on the injustice of it all. Three
public schools designated private supported by public taxes.  Vicious attacks on her
personally in the Letters to the Editor continued for more than a year before the public
began to build up support for her position until the State Legislature knuckled under
the pressure and restored the schools as truly public.

After retiring from the Navy's Supply Center at Pearl Harbor where she began to work onl
y weeks
a
fter the Pearl Harbor attack she was honored by the Admiral in charge with a retirement luncheon
at the PH Officers Club; the only civilian ever so honored at the Officers Club.  

In the middle of WWII the Navy submarines returning needed to be serviced and supplied quickly to
be able to move out as soo
n as possible. Mom was assigned Supervisor in charge of Submarine
supply.  Consul
tations with Naval staff Mom learned how critical supplying submarines to be in and
out more quickly. Mom created a system which did exactly that. Subs arriving would find everything
they needed ready and waiting to be loaded. Never again were they sitting waiting for something to
arrive from wherever.  
Thank you for bearing with me.  Mom was a very humble and lovable person. Her philosophy was,
love and care for each other. Help whenever help is needed if you
can. A reason she never realized her dream of having a Travel Agency and play her
ukulele on the beach at Makaha. She always has had a Hawaiian music group playing for the
pleasure of it anywhere.  This is a means for remembering truly as Saint.

Now to Reading.

Blind, deaf and speechless Helen Keller and her full time live-in tutor and Governess
is the inspiration for creating this "reading method".

Since first learning in a high school class about this wonderful, intelligent scholar
,
world reknown
ed and a highly respected supporter and financial contributor to the handicapped of
the world
, I asked myself,  "How did she escape being a prisoner within her body?" Her wealthy
father had the best
doctors tend to her and they concluded nothing would help her recover.

Helen's wealthy parents needed someone to care for Helen 24/7. Her parents could not..
They asked the doctors to recommend someone to care for Helen in their home day and night .

 As parents they could not tend to their uncontrollable daughter who went into very destructive   
tantrums.  And luckily the doctors found a recent Psychology
graduate with a slight hearing problem
who they believed would be mediocre in her
field. She would have a more lucrative career with this
family
in caring for Hlelen. Ann Sullivan was the girl.

Living with her charge, Helen, all day and night every day, Ann Sullivan was able to
clinically observe Helen's every move and action LIVE.  Helen appreciated her companion
who was able to calm her down gradually, and they got along.

Living and caring for Helen Ann observed that Helen's behavior was inspired by her brain. Her brain
was not affected by her illness.

Her tantrums were the result of frustration and the inability to respond effectively and
speak out
and say whatever it was she disturbing her. She could not satisfy what her brain was telling her..

Believing such was the case, Ann decided to used the method called "palm
reading",writing.in the
palm of one hand the word the other hand was touching, feeling. On a rainy day, Ann had Helen
hold her hand open under rain  water flowing off the roof and in the palm of Helen's other hand
spelled the spoke the word "water". Immediately Helen burst out, "WATER!" which freed her brain
from ever being locked in again. That afternoon, a very excited Helen went scampering around the
yard touching every object within reach as Ann spelled out the name of the objects. Helen learned
32 words before dinner that day.

The fact that
Helen could READ being blind, deaf, and with speech revived, WHY can't TOTS  who
can SEE, HEAR and SPEAK ready to learn to READ?  They CAN and are waiting for the teacher,
anyone, to HELP THEM SEE the words they already use in speaking. From that point on new words
are introduced. It is very difficult for a child to learn to read without KNOWING what the word
MEANS, which is the way learning to read methods existing are used to teach youngsters to read.
They stumble, guess and become frustrated NOT KNOWING THE MEANING OF THE WORD THEY
ARE EXPECTED TO READ. .
